This week we're putting the spotlight on Zusje, not to be confused with Zus who was last week's CARFIE Of The Week. Zusje was rescued off the streets near Hato, the Curaçao International Airport, back in February. She is now ready for adoption and for travel. Let's find this lovely girl a home!

? Mother's Day is here, and what better day to introduce you to the latest addition of our ever-growing CARF family?
? Earlier this week, we received a plea for help after a momma dog and her six puppies were spotted ― out on the streets with no shelter, no support, no safety. Unfortunately, for two of the puppies help came too late. The rest of the family were immediately taken to the vet for medical care. The whole family was covered in fleas and ticks, they have giardia, are infested with worms, and are very malnourished. The puppies are approximately four weeks old, but they barely weigh 1- 1,5 kilos each. The puppies can already eat independently, but the weaker ones are being fed with a pipette to ensure they all get enough nutrients. Momma dog has a severe case of ehrlichia, an illness caused by ticks, which has left her feeling weak and lethargic.
? They have been to two emergency vet visits and we are going to do our very best to get all of them healthy and strong. When they reach that point, we will try and find them loving forever homes. For now, Momma and her four puppies have a temporary roof over their heads and they no longer have to worry where their next meal is coming from.

? Turning a blind eye is not something that we're good at. Even though we're stretching capacity as it is, and some of our dedicated volunteers are leaving the island due to the pandemic, we couldn't possibly say 'no' to helping Baya.
? So we did what had to be done and we rescued this sweet but oh-so skinny girl off the streets. We received a plea for help from Brigitte, or as we call her, Baya's guardian angel. Weighing only 11.5 kilos, we don't know how much longer Baya would have been able to survive on her own. Baya is not only malnourished, she was covered in thousands of fleas and is running a very high fever.
? We rushed Baya to our vet who gave her Doxycylcine, Nandrosol, Dexamethason, and Nexgard Spectra ― adding even more costs to our ever rising vet bill. Baya is very weak, but with time, patience, and understanding we are hopeful that she will blossom into a healthy and happy pet. We will be updating you along her journey to recovery.

Money was already tight, but ever since the pandemic hit our donations dropped to an ultimate low. While the daily care for our more than 100 dogs continues, we had to make the difficult decision to not take in any more dogs right now. Right? Right...? Wrong!

? Last Tuesday, this loving momma delivered 8 (!) puppies just outside the World Trade Center campus. And when Elise sent us pictures of this (adorable) new family along with a desperate plea for help, we couldn't turn her/them down. Leaving them out on the streets is not a good place for newborn puppies, or any pups for that matter. We are hoping we can count on our friends and supporters to contribute towards their vetting, as 9 dogs (momma + her eight puppies) will bring quite some costs.
