CARF CURAÇAO: 11 YEARS OF RESCUING & REHOMING DOGS

Today is a very special day for us as it marks our 11th Anniversary ― but not just our organization's founding. Because CARF is Curaçao's first hands-on, no-kill rescue organization, this milestone marks the very origins of dog rescue on our island!

Since May 29th, 2008, we have rescued unwanted, abandoned, neglected, stray, injured and sick dogs wherever we were needed. Today, we look back on 11 years of rescuing and re-homing thousands of dogs.

But we also want to take this moment to thank you for loyally following us on Facebook and Instagram, for cheering with us through our successes, and mourn with us through our heartbreaks. Your support has allowed us to rescue, vet, spay, neuter and adopt countless dogs who would have otherwise never known love. We couldn't do any of this without our tremendous donors, sponsors, and fellow animal advocates. This day is as much about you as it is about us. From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU.

Our biggest wish remains that one day we won't be needed anymore. Until then, we hope that we can continue to count on your support. Whether it’s through an adoption, a one-time donation, a recurring monthly donation, or simply by helping us to spread the word ― every little bit helps.

Warm regards and a paw shake,

Team CARF Curaçao
Fostering Second Chances Since 2008.

CARFIE Indju was left tied up to a tree by two boys. Fortunately, someone spotted the boys as they walked into the mondi with a dog and she saw them leave without the dog minutes later. Thanks to her paying attention and thanks to your donations, we've been able to help Indju become his best self. Indju is up for adoption, contact stichtingcarf@gmail.com for more info.

Lily came to us in the most terrible condition. One thing that keeps amazing us in dog rescue is how forgiving and loyal these creatures are - even when they have seen the worst humans are capable of.

CARF's Pet Adoption Update: Sneezy

Picture

One of the joys of working at CARF is receiving updates on our adopted dogs. Who remembers Sneezy? Sneezy was adopted in August 2012 and has since been a much loved companion.
Dog's name:
SneezyDog’s former name:
Sneezy. He kept this ridiculous 7 dwarfs-name since he sneezes a lot as does his baasje :-)

Adopted (month/year):
August 2012

What made you want to adopt this dog?
He had such a sad look in his eyes. All he wanted was a home. I did not really want a dog, but I just could not say no to those eyes.

What are the best things about your CARFIE?
He is my best friend. Our happiest moments are together on the couch.

What are your dogs favorite activities?
Sleep, eat, repeat and never too old for playing with silly squishy squeeze toys.

In what ways has your CARFIE changed your life?
He made me realize there are so many dogs in need.  I never really noticed before, but since Sneezy came into my life I see similar sad stories everywhere. He was my first rescue, but not my last.

How would you describe your CARFIE in 3 words?
Best ever happened.

How do people react to your CARFIE?
Everybody loves Sneezy. He is gorgeous, very sweet and listens well.

Does your CARFIE have any nicknames?
(Lovable) Idiot.

Yippee... Alenna Found Her Home!

Alenna's story starts at the landing strip of Hato International Airport. At least, that is where we start her story. We never found out where exactly she came from, but she was first spotted wandering at the airport. The people there were unable to catch her and we were told that if we didn't pick her up, it might end bad for her.

Curaçao Airport is not the best place for a stray dog to wander around. Fortunately, we were able to capture Alenna and bring her to safety. Fast forward to December and Alenna found her forever home right in time for Christmas! We simply couldn't be happier for her.

Go Alenna, we wish you a very happy life with lots of treats and love!

Hurray... Marnix is Adopted!

Who remembers Marnix? That's right. Not too long ago, Marnix was our CARFIE Of The Week. Well, we have some good news. Because Marnix is officially off the market!
We're not sure where Marnix came from but for some reason he choose local school Marnix College as his new hang-out spot. Despite all the students who enjoyed Marnix's presence, some parents decided that Marnix had to go. That's how Marnix ended up with CARF. We took him in and he quickly charmed all volunteers... and his new family!

Marnix is now living a happy life with his very own humans. He was hoping for a loving home where he would be part of the family and he got exactly that! We couldn't be more thrilled for him. Have a long and wonderful life, sweet Marnix!

The Incredible Story of Invictus

* WARNING, GRAPHIC IMAGES * When Invictus was found, we were at a complete loss for words. The huge gaping wound on his back (image in article) was not caused by an infection but allegedly inflected upon him by human hands. Human hands using a machete.
When we first found Invictus in late March, well... just see for yourself. He was in the most horrible shape.

▽ March 27, 2017: Our sweet boy had a little bit of food and a few sips of water this morning but he is sleeping a lot. He is still very critical due to potential complications that may arise from walking around, we suspect for 2 or 3 days, with this horrible injury. Our vet Pieter Claus of Claus Clinic spent three hours (!) removing maggots and debris and flushing the wound.

▽ March 30th, 2017: Getting some fresh air this morning. Invictus is still critical but he has a hell of a fighting spirit. He sends his love and gratitude to all his fans and supporters who have donated to his medical expenses and sent him positive thoughts. Thank you. What a fighting spirit... Go Invictus!

April 7th, 2017: We knew this might happen and unfortunately, it did. Invictus' wound has burst open due to the rejection of dead tissue. The excessive tension on the edges of the wound made it impossible to stitch the wound back together. Fortunately, our vet Pieter Claus of Claus Clinic offered a solution.

▽ April 11th, 2017: Invictus is an amazing dog! He is very friendly, easy-going, and very happy to be alive. Every day is just the best day ever... again. He is incredibly strong both physically and mentally and reacts very well to his treatment. Just scroll down for his before-picture and his today-picture! He eats like a lion, takes his meds, and allows us to groom him without problems. Even the weird construction on his back does not bother him that much. He is incredible! He can't wait to join the other dogs and fool around, but obviously he has to wait a bit for that. Soon Vic, soon!

May 9th, 2017: Invictus in his foster family. What a sweet soul.

June 5th, 2017: Our wonder boy Invictus out and about. We have the best fosters, the best vet, and the best supporters! Without you all, this would not have been possible.

Fast forward to September 2017: Look how stunning Invictus is today! All thanks to your trust, your generosity, his amazing foster, and vet Pieter Claus and his dedicated team at Claus Clinic.
For more information about Invictus (or one of our other CARFIES), please feel free to contact us at stichtingcarf@gmail.com. We will reply to your message as soon as possible.

From Trash To Treasure: Radar

The Story of Radar

Radar was betrayed, left behind to fend for himself, after years of "loyal service" when his owner moved. Radar was living on the street and sleeping in old abandoned buildings in Otrobanda. He survived on scrapes and some meals neighbors would provide him.
When we first heard of him we had no place to take him. Together with a concerned neighbor, we started to care for him on the streets. We provided the neighbor with dog food and medication so she could feed and medicate Radar twice daily. He was given Nexgard Spectra. As soon as he would allow us to touch him, we were able to treat his eye. We suspect he is blind in one eye.

Time For Action

Radar started to look and feel better, but the streets were still not a safe place for him. He would regularly get hit by cars in the busy, narrow street. It's a miracle he survived this long. He would be chased, spit on, and he has stones thrown at him by passersby. He had also been attacked a few times by other dogs fighting for food.

One day, as we arrived to clean his eye and provide him with pain medication, we heard that he was napping on the sidewalk when a car drove onto the sidewalk and hit him. As we were getting our supplies ready, we witnessed Radar being attacked by a dog. He had to get the dog off him twice. At that moment we knew we had to get him to safety. Radar was loaded into the car without a back-up plan.

Luckily we knew one of our regular fosters would soon be able to foster again. After a few days in emergency boarding, Radar moved to his own little corner of paradise. Radar is still being treated for ehrlichia and anemia, his skin is slowly getting better and he is on daily pain management for sore joints. Fortunately, he tested negative for heart worm (?).

A (Goofy) Treasure He Is

Radar has shown us to be extremely cuddly, loyal and goofy. He's a loving and sensitive dog. We are thrilled to see him feeling and looking better and are so happy he is now out of danger in a safe, warm and loving environment. Like all living creatures should be.

We would like to thank Chantal and JoAnn who both alerted us about Radar and who both made financial contributions to his initial medical expenses.

With so many rescues in our care and completely dependent on the generosity of our friends and followers we would like to ask if anyone is able to assist in Radar's expenses. He will be neutered and another blood test will be done to make sure he's cured of ehrlichia. Any donation is greatly appreciated.

Support CARF Curaçao

Donations are very much appreciated. You can donate to our local MCB-account: 21199501 (Maduro & Curiel's Bank), with address: Beshiweg 1, Willemstad, Curaçao. If you would like to become Radar's sponsor that is also possible. For more information on sponsor ships (virtual adoptions), please email stichtingcarf@gmail.com. On behalf of the entire team, old man Radar sends you his love.

Kingsley Has Found His Castle

Hip, hip, hurray! Kingsley has found his forever family... in The Netherlands! His flight arrived in Amsterdam earlier today and he is currently getting accustomed to his new home and the temperatures in his new country - haha.
Kingsley was rescued off the streets back in April, around King's Day (hence the name). The first few weeks after he was found, Kingsley was able to recover at one of our foster families. When he got his strength back, he was placed with some other puppies who showed him how much fun being a puppy on Curaçao can be!

If there's one thing we've learned about Kingsley during the time that he was in our care, it would be that this little guy is SO photogenic! There are so many great shots of him it was very difficult to choose which ones to show here.

Little Kingsley, we wish you a life full of pampering and unconditional love. You deserve it. We would like to thank Kingsley's family for adopting him and offering him a wonderful life (please share a picture of him with us every once in a while!). We wish you a long and happy life together!

CARF's Miracles of 2016

As a non-profit organization without any government support, we fully rely on the generosity of donors and volunteers in order to fund and fulfill our rescue efforts. Thanks to your donations we were able to make some miracles happen in 2016!
We can't possibly mention all of the dogs that we have helped, but we've made a selection of CARFIES that we were able to save this year. Without your support:

Maxim
Our handsome Maxim stole hearts all around the world! He would have never known the joy of walking and running on all four paws. He was found as a puppy, wandering the streets by himself, hopping around on three legs. Once he started to feel better, he was adopted by a loving family. Today, he uses all four legs and runs around as if he's training for a marathon.

Dushi & Chopke (previously named Dushi & Manneke)
These two brothers were found on the landfill by a caring couple. We were able to secure Dushi first; he was tiny, scared and didn't trust people at all. Chopke was "rescued" and taken home by people, who brought him back to the landfill a few weeks later when they decided they didn't want to offer him a home after all. Un-be-lievable. Gladly the couple that had previously rescued Dushi, were able to also catch Chopke. Both Dushi and Chopke have been adopted (by family members of the people that found them) and are now living like a god in France... eh, Belgium.
(Picture below: Dushi)
Bobby & Marley (previously Poeh & Piki)
Two more CARFIES who really hit the jackpot this year! The last thing this island needs is more unwanted puppies brought into the world by some "backyard breeder" who thinks it would be great to make money on each of his dog's precious offspring. Dogs should be family members, not money-making machines! Bobby & Marley were found in a backyard shed and nurtured back to health by a loving foster family. Their new family came to visit the island, fell in love with these two, and decided on the spot that they would adopt them. Bobby and Marley are living happily ever after in The Netherlands. Click here to read their story.
Rosie (previously named Roslyn)
Rosie was found wandering the streets with a long chain tied around her neck. Two of our volunteers happened to drive by and were able to catch her. She didn't put up a fight when she was carried into the car and that's pretty much Rosie; sweet, calm, and trusting. After spending several weeks at one of our foster homes, Roslyn was adopted together with puppy Josie/Joslyn. She is loving life with her adoptive parents and her favorite thing to do these days is going for walks with the fam.
Bill
We cannot not mention Bill in our list of miracles! The before and after pictures of this guy make us feel so proud and thankful of the work done by our foster families. When we first found Bill he was in bad, really bad, shape. We picked him up with his tail between his legs and his head down. When you look at him now, there is so much love and joy sparkling from his eyes. It's just incredible how loving and forgiving dogs can be.
Which CARFIE is your favorite "miracle" and why? We'd love to hear it! Leave a comment below or share your story with us at stichtingcarf@gmail.com.

VIve La Fox!

Picture
Our little princess Fox has made it home. Our first French CARFIE. Vive la Fox! ??

We already have CARFIES living in The Netherlands, Canada, Spain, Germany, Belgium, and the United States of America, and as of this week, we also have a CARFIE living it up in France! Our little princess Fox has found her forever home and we couldn't be happier for her.

For more information about adopting a CARFIE abroad, contact stichtingcarf@gmail.com.

Piki & Poeh: From Breeding Machines to Cherished Family Members

Happy ends don't come any better than this. Piki & Poeh (now Bobby & Marly) were breeding machines for their deadbeat owner. Their owner who never provided any sort of medical care, love, attention or even anything remotely considered proper living conditions.

It took months of intensive medical treatment, ranging from mange to tick borne disease, heartworm, etcetera for Poek and Piki to fully recover. This morning, they landed at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Poeh and Piki are ready for a new phase in their lives together. They will be living with the most loving and caring humans. Truly a match made in heaven!

We are so happy and proud and look forward to their adventures and a life of love, cuddles, cookies and above all health. A special thanks goes to their awesome foster parents who took such good care of them for seven months!

* Interested in adopting your own CARFIE? Adopting a CARFIE means welcoming a new family member to your household. The ultimate goal of rescuing stray dogs is to find them a loving and caring forever home where they get a second chance at life. Rescued dogs have usually seen both sides of life and that’s why they appreciate the little things like a safe place to sleep, regular meals, and fun activities with their humans. They will reward you every day with their love, loyalty, and companionship. Adopting a CARFIE will bring so much fun and joy to your entire family. Contact stichtingcarf@gmail.com for more info.

Auf Wiedersehen, Herr Henry!

Little did Henry know his lucky stars were shining on him when he was roaming around Komomo Beach. He was emaciated, covered in more ticks than we could imagine, anemic, and suffering from tick fever. Things were not looking good for him. But that was about to change...
Marion and Daniel were visiting from Germany, saw him roaming around, and wanted to help him. They contacted us and the rest is history. Yesterday, Henry took off to live his new life full of new adventures in Germany.

What do you do when your flight is delayed? Well, you hang out, check out the scenery, chat a little, nap for a while, and make some new friends. Henry was a true rockstar and took his role as ambassador for the resilient mondi dog very seriously.

Henry was the talk of the airport and we took the opportunity to teach this group of kids about properly caring for dogs, how to approach and pet dogs, how very important it is to spay and neuter and before we knew it we had to say auf wiedersehen to Henry.

Thank you John for kindly being his flight parent and looking after Henry so well. And thank you to his new loving and caring family for saving and adopting Henry. We could not be more proud of this special CARFIE and wish him and his new humans only the best!
Home, sweet home. We love you Henry!

Adopted: Ian & Tammy

Ian & Tammy (new names: Rex & Cookie) have found their happiness. Together with their sibling (who has already been adopted), they were found by tourists who were visiting the island. They were tiny, weak, and help should not have come any later for them. Today, they are 'living the life' with their new family who have a big yard for them to play in and a big heart to love them.
We are absolutely thrilled that these two were adopted together. Thank you to their new humans for spoiling and loving them. What a lucky pups they are today!

Felis Dia Di Bandera!

On behalf of all of us at CARF, Sylvester says: "Felis dia di bandera!"

On July 2nd, Caribbean island Curaçao celebrates 'Dia di Bandera' (day of the flag) during which we celebrate our country, culture and heritage. CARFIE Sylvester is ready to party!

For more information about Sylvester or one of our other adoptable CARFIES, please contact us at stichtingcarf@gmail.com.
