Happy Mother's Day!

A very happy Mother's Day to all women with human and non-human babies!
On this special day, all nine puppies want to wish their mommy a relaxed Mother's Day (only 8 puppies are showing, because well, number 9 had to take the picture...) While the puppies are having fun with the camera, Momma Perdita is enjoying some well-deserved quiet 'me-time'.

Thank you to all the great, strong, devoted, tender, sweet and loving moms out there; human moms and foster moms and puppy moms and mom-to-be's!

Want to help momma Perdita by offering a warm, loving and safe home to one of her babies? Contact stichtingcarf@gmail.com and we will happily set up a meet & greet.

Word of Thanks To Our Supporters And Volunteers

One of our foster mommies had a little toy and treat drive amongst her international friends and was able to collect a wonderful batch of puppy toys (we are knee high in active and playful pups all looking for homes) and healthy treats for our many adult rescues (most also happy, healthy and fully vetted - ready to pack their bags!)
So very blessed by the amazing supporters on- and off-shore. Those who have a monthly standing order, those that skip a cup of coffee and donate whenever they can, those that volunteer their time to play, cuddle, walk, feed our rescues.

The fosters, the ones behind the scenes who keep things rolling (it is no small feat), all of you who in one way, shape or form contribute to being part of the solution. We are very grateful and could never accomplish this much without your trust and support.

Thank you!

Do you love big dogs? Then Berend might be the one for you. If you would like to come meet this amazing dog for yourself, drop us a message at stichtingcarf@gmail.com. We will be more than happy to set up a meeting. Be prepared to fall in love...

Berend has come so far from a past of horrible abuse and neglect. He was so damaged emotionally and physically but he has shown such resilience and we are darn proud of his progress and his kindness.

He still has some trust issues when he first meets someone but what a difference from when he first came to us. He even loves going on walks. You go Berend!

CARF Meet & Greet April 2016

On Saturday, April 23rd, CARF Curaçao hosted another Meet & Greet event where people could meet some of our adoptable CARFIES. We planned on opening our doors at 10 in the morning, but some first guests knocked on our doors a little bit after 9:00am. They were very excited to see some of our adoptable puppies, and to be honest... we can't blame them!
But it's not just puppies that are looking for a family to call their own. We've got everything from fluffy dogs to short-haired dogs, little ones to big ones, young dogs to old dogs, and pretty much everything in between!

Not everyone who stopped by our event was there to adopt. We also welcomed several supporters who came bringing donations. We received bags of dog food, a few cans of dog food, dog treats, towels and blankets. It warms our hearts to know that others are so willing to help us take care of our CARFIES. Many thanks to everyone who dropped by bringing donations, enquiring about our dogs, and offering help.

Our next event will take place on Sunday, May 29th at La Palmeraie Resort in Santa Catharina. During this special event, we will celebrate CARF's 8th anniversary with a special breakfast, flea market, and mini meet & greet. Visit our Facebook page for more information and tickets.

Couldn't make it to our event? If you would like to meet our adoptable dogs on a different day or time, please contact us at stichtingcarf@gmail.com to set up an appointment. For these and more of our adoptable dogs, check out our gallery.

6 Tips On How to Avoid Losing Your Dog

No one ever plans to lose a beloved dog, but every year many dogs do get lost. Tragically, some never are returned to their owners. Here are a few tips on how to avoid losing your dog (or in case you do lose them, how to find them back).
April 23 is National Lost Dog Awareness DayThis special day was created to bring attention to all dogs that get lost each year and to celebrate the dogs that have been successfully reunited with their families. CARF regularly receives messages from people asking for help to find back their dogs after they ran off or just vanished.

Here are some tips on how to avoid losing your dog, and in the unfortunate event that your pet does get lost, how to find them back.

1. Dog Tags
Identify your dog with a collar with your phone number, name and address tag at all times. If your dog ever escapes or takes off, chances are someone will find him of her. If they have a number that they can call when they find your dog, you might have your dog back in no time. You can buy your personalized tags and collars at PiDiS Pet Department Store (Dr Maalweg 21A) and other pet stores. Ready while you wait!

2. Collars With Phone Numbers
There's always a chance that your dog might lose its dog tags while he's out. Use a permanent marker to write your phone numbers on the outside of the collar, in case the tags gets lost.

3. Spay or Neuter Your Dog
Through neutering, you can help your dog live a happier, healthier, and longer life and also help reduce pet overpopulation. A spayed dog is less likely to run off because they are not searching for a mate. Since they are less likely to run away, they are less likely to be hit by cars, or receive injuries from fights with neighborhood dogs.

4. Be Careful During Holidays And Weather Extremes
Be extra careful during holidays with fireworks (New Year's Eve) and weather extremes (fireworks, storm, heavy rainfall, etc.). Dogs can become very stressed by loud noises and even dogs who normally don’t jump fences can leap over them easily in fear. Lock your dog in the house if there’s a chance he or she could dig under or jump over the outside fence.

5. Have Your Pets Microchipped
Talk with your veterinarian about having your dog microchipped for permanent identification. You can contact stichtingcarf@gmail.com to schedule an appointment with our vet. Once microchipped, make sure to register your dog at els-angels.com and keep the info in a safe place and updated.

6. Take Pictures Of Your Pets
Remember to always have updated pictures of your dogs in case they do get lost. Also make sure to take pictures of any unusual markings or scars. If your pet does get lost, you will have a picture to print and spread lost-flyers in your area. You can also create awareness on Facebook.com/curacaopets.lostandfound.

Who Let The Dogs Out?

We! We! We! On Sunday, April 17th, a group of volunteers came together to spend their morning taking some of our CARFIES for a walk. These walks help the dogs get used to walking on a leash and being around other dogs and people. The dogs had a great time and so did we! A very special thanks to everyone who came out and made this possible.
This time, the CARF Walk took us to the salt flats. Volunteers included young and old, families and individuals, all excited to take our dogs for a fun walk. At the end of the walk, the CARFIES were treated to refreshing 'pupsicles'. Scroll down for more pictures of this fun group outing.

If you would like to join us during one of our upcoming CARF Walks, please feel free to send us a message at stichtingcarf@gmail.com.

CARF Organiseert Open Ochtend Voor Hondenliefhebbers

CARF | CARFIE Of The Week: Zani ♀

Young Zani was only a few weeks old when she and her sisters were dumped. Gladly they were found and nursed back to health. Now that she is old enough, completely healthy, and up-to-date with vaccinations, she’s looking forward to move to her own home.
Just like dozens of other CARF puppies that are currently waiting for their golden basket, Zani will be attending Saturday's CARF Meet & Greet at Beshiweg 1 in Dominguito. From 10:00 to 11:45 a.m. you are welcome to come meet, play, pet and cuddle with Zani and our other CARFIES. Will you be there? For more information, click here.

Would you like more information about Zani or one of our other dogs? Please send an email to stichtingcarf@gmail.com. You will receive a reply as soon as possible.

CARF Update: Sylvester

Our senior citizen Sylvester is ready for the weekend! His plans? Sitting in his favorite chair, thinking about memories of the past, while waiting for his next meal to be served. Oh yes, our Sylvester is living the good life these days!
Sylvester was rescued December 31st, 2015. He had a severe hernia, tickborne disease and heartworm. He was operated for his hernia and neutered. He is still on his road to recovery as he will soon start his immiticide treatment. We were fortunate enough to have a kind sponsor, Sylvia, pay for his expensive heartworm immiticide tx.

In the meantime, Sylvester is the most loving and serene CARFIE and we enjoy every minute of his company.

CARF | CARFIE Of The Week: Roslyn ♀

You won't find anyone happier to see you coming home, than CARFIE Roslyn. She's a pretty relaxed dog who loves to be around people and enjoys being cuddled, but at the same time, she is also perfectly fine hanging out by herself for a while. Roslyn is more than ready to move to her forever home. Will she be the one greeting you home every day...?
Roslyn was found by two of our volunteers who happened to spot her on the side of the road. They saw Roslyn wandering along a busy street, in heat, and dragging a chain around her neck. She was skinny as can be and in desperate need of help. Together, our volunteers were able to catch Roslyn and lift her into one of their cars to take her to our vet.

Our vet took some blood from Roslyn and luckily, her results looked good. She did not have heartworm nor tick disease. She was spayed in March and she gained quite some weight at her foster home. Roslyn is feeling ánd looking much, much better these days.

Actually, she's feeling so good that we believe she's ready to move to a loving family or individual who wants to adopt her.

For more information about Roslyn or one of our other CARFIES, please feel free to contact us at stichtingcarf@gmail.com. We will reply to you at our earliest convenience.

Heartworm Facts You Need To Know

Heartworm is in our top three of most common diseases we encounter in our daily work. It is a disease that will slowly kill your pet. What frustrates us the most is that it can easily be prevented.
You won’t even notice the heartworm infection until it’s in an advanced stage. And by that time it will be a long and expensive treatment with a lot of risks for the animal. In Curaçao you will have a 100% guarantee that your dog will get infected with heartworm if left untreated.

Real Life Case Study
Pancho was one of our many CARFIES that suffered from heartworm. Pancho was a sweet dog that came to us with tick fever, heartworm, liver failure, and a paralyzed leg. Even with all his issues Pancho was always happy to cuddle and guarded his foster’s home like no other.

Pancho had been bitten by a mosquito carrying the heartworm larvae. The larvae traveled to his heart where they nestled and fed on the blood flowing through the heart. The early stages happened unnoticed. Then, as Pancho’s heart began to fill with worms he started coughing occasionally. When Pancho arrived at his foster home, his foster noticed that his tongue would turn blue after a big meal or that he would sit down to rest while eating. When his foster would play fetch with him and the other dogs, Pacho would soon lag behind, give up, and sit down and pant.

When Pancho was finally healthy enough for treatment (taking his other ails into consideration), the vet gave him an injection in his muscle next to his spine. This made him very unwell that evening. Pancho needed to be restricted from exercise and remain in a cool area during treatment. After a month he had to go back for the same injection, followed by another one the next day.  Not only is this a painful treatment and an even more painful disease, it is a costly one!

Poor Pancho passed away during an operation on his leg due to his enlarged heart from the heartworms.

Preventing Is Better Than Curing
Protect your dog from getting heartworm. It’s so easy! Heartgard, a chewable, palatable pill sold in Curaçao, can be found at various pet shops and at all veterinary practices. One pill a month will save your dog from a slow death! You’ll need to start giving your pup Heartgard as soon as they are 6 months old. Never start your dog on heartworm prevention without checking  if your dog is infected with heartworm.
