From Trash To Treasure: Radar
The Story of Radar
Time For Action
Radar started to look and feel better, but the streets were still not a safe place for him. He would regularly get hit by cars in the busy, narrow street. It's a miracle he survived this long. He would be chased, spit on, and he has stones thrown at him by passersby. He had also been attacked a few times by other dogs fighting for food.
One day, as we arrived to clean his eye and provide him with pain medication, we heard that he was napping on the sidewalk when a car drove onto the sidewalk and hit him. As we were getting our supplies ready, we witnessed Radar being attacked by a dog. He had to get the dog off him twice. At that moment we knew we had to get him to safety. Radar was loaded into the car without a back-up plan.
Luckily we knew one of our regular fosters would soon be able to foster again. After a few days in emergency boarding, Radar moved to his own little corner of paradise. Radar is still being treated for ehrlichia and anemia, his skin is slowly getting better and he is on daily pain management for sore joints. Fortunately, he tested negative for heart worm (?).
A (Goofy) Treasure He Is
Radar has shown us to be extremely cuddly, loyal and goofy. He's a loving and sensitive dog. We are thrilled to see him feeling and looking better and are so happy he is now out of danger in a safe, warm and loving environment. Like all living creatures should be.
We would like to thank Chantal and JoAnn who both alerted us about Radar and who both made financial contributions to his initial medical expenses.
With so many rescues in our care and completely dependent on the generosity of our friends and followers we would like to ask if anyone is able to assist in Radar's expenses. He will be neutered and another blood test will be done to make sure he's cured of ehrlichia. Any donation is greatly appreciated.

We named him Rico and he will be simply stunning once he's fully healed. Please, please help us cover his medical expenses and share him so we can find him a loving foster (or adoption) home where he can recover from this nightmare.
Any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated.

"Curaçao; a country with such a blatant disregard for animal welfare"
We googled animal welfare departments in Curaçao and were shocked to find there does not appear to be a government organization dedicated to the protection of animal welfare. Luckily we found Curaçao Animal Rights Foundation (CARF) a non-profit organization and they were able to rescue the dog.
For a country with one of the highest standards of living in the Caribbean, with a high-income economy, and a well developed infastructure it's unacceptable to have animals wandering the streets in such appalling condition. Since Curaçao's economy greatly relies on tourism it's in its best interest to invest in the welfare of animals. Tourists do not come to countries like Curacao and expect to see animals in such dire situations.
If the government is not intending to institute an appropriate organization to care for homeless and abused animals, then greater funding is required to keep organizations such as CARF operating. Without such organizations, there is no alternative to care for these animals, and that is unacceptable.
You can be assured that neither my husband nor myself would choose to spend our money in a country with such a blatant disregard for animal welfare. We have a well read travel blog and Facebook page and I must inform that the story is not going over well - people are shocked and disgusted.
(Letter by K.T. to Curaçao, January 2017)

Kingsley Has Found His Castle
If there's one thing we've learned about Kingsley during the time that he was in our care, it would be that this little guy is SO photogenic! There are so many great shots of him it was very difficult to choose which ones to show here.
Little Kingsley, we wish you a life full of pampering and unconditional love. You deserve it. We would like to thank Kingsley's family for adopting him and offering him a wonderful life (please share a picture of him with us every once in a while!). We wish you a long and happy life together!
CARF | CARFIE Of The Week: Lenny
This is what our foster has to say about Lenny: "His fur is super soft, like a teddy bear. He is super sweet, a quick learner and a very happy pup. He has been given a second chance at a good life and whoever gets to adopt him will have a very special little guy."
Lenny was named after Lenny Kravitz, one of the rock stars who visited the island to perform at the Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival 2016.
What do you think friends? Can we get Lenny home for the holidays? We still have about a month, so we think we can do it! Will you give this rockstar a loving forever home? Email us at stichtingcarf@gmail.com to set up a time to meet this awesome dog.
6 Ways How You Can Help CARF This Holiday Season
Help the Homeless Dogs of Curaçao
1. Donate Wish List Items
We have a wish list of items, incl. dog food (ProPlan, which is being sold at Bremar Agencies a.o.), toys, bedding, and cleaning supplies such as bleach and paper kitchen towels - it can cost as little as a few guilders. Pick up a couple items next time you’re shopping for groceries. You can drop off your items at our friends at THEA Gifts & More (Cas Coraweg 39A) or email stichtingcarf@gmail.com to schedule a date and time to drop off your donation, or have it picked up.
2. Become A Virtual Adopter
Do you have a friend, co-worker or family member who loves animals but can't adopt one due to finances or residential rules? Give that special person a unique gift; a CARF Virtual Adoption. We will send a certificate, photos, and regular updates with a note about the gift sponsorship you have donated in their name! Of course, you can also become a CARF Virtual Adopter yourself. Pick your adoptable CARFIE and contact stichtingcarf@gmail.com.
3. Throw a Christmas or New Year's Eve Party
What are you asking for Christmas this year? What about asking friends or family to make a donation to CARF in your name? Or when hosting a Christmas or New Year's Eve party, ask your guests to bring a gift for our rescued dogs. You could also set up a jar on the drinks or snacks table where your guests can leave a donation; it’s an easy add-on to an event you’re already hosting. Or put out two jars; one for women and one for men, and make it a fun little competition who will donate most!
4. Donate Money, Gift Certificates or FunMiles
All donations, no matter how small, help save lives. December is an expensive month for most people, but perhaps you can make a small one-time donation or schedule a monthly donation for 2017? If all our 5000+ Facebook fans would donate one or two guilders per month that would make a huge difference! You can also help out by donating gift certificates or using your FunMiles to buy items from our wish list.
5. Foster a Dog
We work with loving and supportive foster parents who provide temporary care to our dogs until we find them a forever home. Placing rescued dogs in foster homes frees up space to help newly rescued dogs. CARF pays for food and vet bills, so fostering does not have to be a burden on your wallet. Providing the shelter and love that these dogs need while they wait for a forever home is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling things you can do to help.
6. Like and Share Our Posts
This is free of costs and takes about 3 seconds of your time. Are you already liking us on Facebook and Instagram? By liking our pages and sharing our posts, you are helping us reach more people who could potentially support us. Sometimes the only thing standing between a homeless pet and a forever home is a view by the right person.
CARF's Miracles of 2016
Maxim
Our handsome Maxim stole hearts all around the world! He would have never known the joy of walking and running on all four paws. He was found as a puppy, wandering the streets by himself, hopping around on three legs. Once he started to feel better, he was adopted by a loving family. Today, he uses all four legs and runs around as if he's training for a marathon.
These two brothers were found on the landfill by a caring couple. We were able to secure Dushi first; he was tiny, scared and didn't trust people at all. Chopke was "rescued" and taken home by people, who brought him back to the landfill a few weeks later when they decided they didn't want to offer him a home after all. Un-be-lievable. Gladly the couple that had previously rescued Dushi, were able to also catch Chopke. Both Dushi and Chopke have been adopted (by family members of the people that found them) and are now living like a god in France... eh, Belgium.
(Picture below: Dushi)
Two more CARFIES who really hit the jackpot this year! The last thing this island needs is more unwanted puppies brought into the world by some "backyard breeder" who thinks it would be great to make money on each of his dog's precious offspring. Dogs should be family members, not money-making machines! Bobby & Marley were found in a backyard shed and nurtured back to health by a loving foster family. Their new family came to visit the island, fell in love with these two, and decided on the spot that they would adopt them. Bobby and Marley are living happily ever after in The Netherlands. Click here to read their story.
Rosie was found wandering the streets with a long chain tied around her neck. Two of our volunteers happened to drive by and were able to catch her. She didn't put up a fight when she was carried into the car and that's pretty much Rosie; sweet, calm, and trusting. After spending several weeks at one of our foster homes, Roslyn was adopted together with puppy Josie/Joslyn. She is loving life with her adoptive parents and her favorite thing to do these days is going for walks with the fam.
We cannot not mention Bill in our list of miracles! The before and after pictures of this guy make us feel so proud and thankful of the work done by our foster families. When we first found Bill he was in bad, really bad, shape. We picked him up with his tail between his legs and his head down. When you look at him now, there is so much love and joy sparkling from his eyes. It's just incredible how loving and forgiving dogs can be.
