A Word of Thanks

In animal rescue you can easily get overwhelmed by the daily logistics and challenges. Getting caught up in the stress, sadness and fatigue. But there are also the "highs" like when you are able to get your adored rescues in loving, lifetime homes. Be it on the island or occasionally abroad.
We just want to take this moment to SINCERELY THANK all our dedicated fosters, volunteers, sponsors, fans and followers. Rescue work is team work and we are blessed and proud to be part of such a loving and trusting community that is TEAMCARF.

It is truly an international movement with support from across the globe. We pride ourselves on the best possible (medical) care for our street dogs, cats and more... and could NEVER do this without YOU! Un danki di kurason.

Scroll down for a few of our highlights of the last month.

Dushi and Chopke (previously Manneke), the two brothers who started their lives frightened, hungry and hurting living on a landfill, are now in Belgium. Thanks to longtime CARF supporters Thierry & Pascale (left) who worked so hard to catch them, and who fostered Dushi these last few months, these brothers will now enjoy a careless life of luxury and security with their adoptive parents. Awesome job guys, you saved not one but two lives!

Kanoa, who recently moved to the Netherlands, is having such a blast! Here she is enjoying a walk in the dunes with her furry sister. She also went to her first restaurant a few days ago. This is just so amazing and we are so very grateful to her loving family.

Trinity and Fien, both rescued from terrible situations. Excellent ambassadors for the resilient Curacao Street Dog breed. Here they are enjoying a sunset on the beach in their new home country Spain.

Never has a name been so appropriate for one of our rescues. Lucky was found by Tanja & Vinny in the secluded area of Lagun while vacationing in Curaçao. After receiving the necessary medical treatments to get well he was ready to join them. Earlier this month he made the trip to his lifetime home in New York State to live with his saviours ! Lucky was a true champ during the trip and we are so proud of how he has settled in to his new home and new routine. We are so grateful to this loving family for adopting Lucky Lagun and for their generous donation towards the care of Lucky's fellow CARFIES. Lucky had no idea how his life would change the day he was seen by his rescuers. We wish you all the best sweetie and we will see you again soon!

About a month ago, Jo and Rosie (Joslyn and Roslyn) were adopted by a lovely couple who fell in love with Roslyn after seeing some of her pictures on our Facebook. They also wanted to adopt a puppy and after meeting several of our CARFIES they found a cute little sister for Rosie in Jo. Rosie and Jo immediately hit it off and have been by each others' sides ever since. Thank you Alex & Susi for giving these two a second chance in life!

Adopted: Lucky Lagun Finally Finds His Luck

Home in time for Father's day! Never has a name been so appropriate for one of our rescues. Lucky was found by Tanja and Vinny in the secluded area of Lagun while they were vacationing in Curaçao. They immediately knew they wanted a better life for him, a life that he could spend living with them!

Vacations always come to an end sooner or later, and Tanja and Vinny had to go back home, without Lucky. Although they couldn't take Lucky home with them that they, the decided they wanted to adopt him and have him fly over as soon as he'd be ready to make the trip.

So Lucky stayed on Curaçao and became a CARFIE. After receiving the necessary medical treatments to get well, Lucky was finally ready to join his new family in the States. This week, Lucky made the trip to his lifetime home in New York State to live with his saviours!

8 Before & After Photos Show What Love Does To Dogs

A little TLC goes a long way for a homeless animal. Several of our foster familie shared their before and after pictures with us. Check them out to see what a combination of a loving (foster) home, quality food, and an amazing veterinary team can do for dogs.

Puppy Kingsley became a CARFIE just around King's Day, hence the name. When we found him, he was covered in ticks (yes, those are all ticks on the left picture). Fast forward three/four weeks later and he's all smiles. Kingsley has been chipped and vaccinated and is ready to be adopted. Contact stichtingcarf@gmail.com for more info or to set up a meet & greet.

Puppy Maxim was in rough shape when he first joined the CARF family. His paw got severely injured and he wouldn't use it. He was placed in a foster home where he learned how to trust, act like a puppy, and where he made a miraculous recovery. Maxim has been adopted by a very loving family and is using all four paws these days.

We know what you're thinking, 'is this even the same dog?' The answer is, yes. Dushi was found on the landfill. He was in very bad shape and didn't trust people at all. He was placed in a foster home where another, adult dog taught him 'how to dog'. Today, Dushi is the most outgoing, social, hairy cuddle bug that you could imagine. Dushi is living with his foster family but will move to his forever home in June 2016.

Roslyn was found wandering the streets, in heat, dragging a chain around her neck. From the very beginning, Roslyn has been so very sweet. She just wants to cuddle, be pet, and be as close to her human as possible. Roslyn was adopted late May and is now living the good life with her adoptive parents and furry sister.

If it wasn't for those adorable, big ears of her, would you even recognize Leda? This little cutie was rescued just outside of Hato International Airport. Although still a little shy at times, Leda has pretty much turned into a little ball of energy. She isn't ready to be adopted just yet as we are still treating her heartworm condition, but if you're interested in offering Leda a loving home, please contact stichtingcarf@gmail.com.

One of last year's recoveries, that we had to share with you. Buddy was found at Cas Abao Beach, where they weren't all too happy with him. A volunteer drove all the way out there to pick him up. He recovered in one of our foster homes and blossomed in the company of other dogs. Buddy was adopted in summer '15 and is living a happy life with his adoptive family and furry friend.

Sam was definitely a public's favorite. Many people followed his updates and asked us how he was doing. Sam was found wandering the streets by himself. A family found and rescued him. He was moved to a foster family where was discovered that Sam was very ill. He wouldn't eat, had no interest in water, and had zero energy. Of course it wasn't just the love he received from his foster family that helped him get better, but it sure did help. Sam has been adopted by his foster family and together with his furry friend (also a CARFIE) he is enjoying life to the fullest.

Who doesn't remember little Awa? Despite the severe issues with his liver and his clumsiness, Awa was an absolute volunteer favorite. Awa no longer wears his cast and is all settled in his 'furever home' now, living happily ever after with the family that found and rescued him.

The overpopulation of homeless dogs on Curaçao is overwhelming, but it's inspiring recoveries like these, that make animal rescue so worthwhile and motivating.

You can help! Being in a home instead of a boarding facility makes a tremendous difference for a lonely and frightened dog.  For more information about becoming a foster parent or to schedule a meeting to discuss possibilities, please contact stichtingcarf@gmail.com.

With your help, we can place even more adult dogs and puppies into new homes where they will be loved, cherished, appreciated, and admired. Don't forget to follow us on Facebook and Instagram, and share our updates. A lot of our dogs find new and loving homes through internet and social media sharing. It really does make a difference!

CARF Update: Sylvester

Our senior citizen Sylvester is ready for the weekend! His plans? Sitting in his favorite chair, thinking about memories of the past, while waiting for his next meal to be served. Oh yes, our Sylvester is living the good life these days!
Sylvester was rescued December 31st, 2015. He had a severe hernia, tickborne disease and heartworm. He was operated for his hernia and neutered. He is still on his road to recovery as he will soon start his immiticide treatment. We were fortunate enough to have a kind sponsor, Sylvia, pay for his expensive heartworm immiticide tx.

In the meantime, Sylvester is the most loving and serene CARFIE and we enjoy every minute of his company.

From Trash (Literally) To Treasure

From Trash (Literally) To Treasure

From Trash to Treasure

At the beginning of this week we welcomed a new puppy to the ever-growing CARF family. This 12-week old boy was found on the landfill. Thrown away like he is trash. He had been spotted a while back but it was a huge task to secure him. This little puppy is practically feral and he wouldn't let anyone near.

Until now, he had never known the kindness of a cuddle or a gentle pat on his head. As you can see, his mange condition is quite advanced. Just imagine how much he must have suffered out there, resorting to scavenging the landfill for a scrap of whatever he could find to survive. As of now, this fella will never go hungry again. Plus, he will be getting the best medical attention available!

Please find it in your hearts to donate towards our cause of 'Fostering Second Chances' and providing much needed medical assistance to so many, too many, sick and injured street dogs. We have our hands full. It is hard to keep up with our financial commitments to our suppliers (dog food, medicines, cleaning supplies, etc). It is a pity a handful of animal advocates and supporters have to do a job that in our humble opinion should be the responsibility of our government...

Brazil Pups Get Their Happy Ending

You remember our Brazil puppies, right? We first learned about Adriana, Alessandra, Camila, Flavia, Francesco, Giselle, and Marlon in August this year, when one of our volunteers found them in the bushes behind their yard.
We named them after Brazilian top models, hence the name 'Brazil pups'. The puppies were estimated to be only 4-5 weeks young when they were first found, so gladly momma dog was still in the picture to take care of them.

Our volunteers made sure the pups were monitored, fed and provided with deworming and vitamins. It took some time and devotion, but they quite rapidly turned into happy, energetic puppies.

Fast forward three months later, and they have all found their forever home and are now taken care of by their wonderful family members. Many thanks to those of you who opened your hearts and homes to these beauties. We wish all families nothing but the best. Beijos!

Talking about a happy ending! Puppy Alessandra was adopted but she didn't leave CARF without taking her close friend Bob with her. We are so grateful these two are part of the same family now. Have a wonderful life, sweeties!
Good news for Camila! This little teddy bear was the last puppy of the litter to move to her forever home, but it was worth the wait. Camila has been adopted by a loving couple who already have some dogs in their family. Camila has been accepted as one of them and is enjoying her new life to the fullest!
If there was ever a puppy with 'puppy eyes', it's Flavia. This pretty lady is such a sweet and gentle dog, and with her gorgeous eyes she easily wins over the heart of everyone she meets. We're so happy she has found her favorite human!
Francesco (new name Barney) hit the jackpot! He was adopted by a caring couple who has lots of experiences with dogs and who understand the care and attention they need. Barney also has not one, not two, but three furry friends, so he never has to feel bored or alone.
They say dogs are a man's best friend and we couldn't agree more. Sweet Giselle (new name Luna) has found her new best friend and we couldn't be happier for her. Dear Luna, we wish you a long life of happiness, exciting car rides, long walks with your humans and most of all, lots of love!
Look at our little Marlon (new name Litho) in his new, big family. He literally couldn't have asked for more! Litho will always have someone to play with and we're sure that he will get all the love and attention he needs and deserves.
We would like to thank all volunteers who took great care of the 'Brazil pups' when they were still recovering from their bad start in life. Special thanks goes out to the families who have adopted these puppies and are giving them a second chance at life. We wish you and your CARFIE(S) many happy years together

(At this time, we have no pictures of Adriana with her family but we're glad to announce that she was adopted - just like her siblings- and that she too is enjoying life in her new home with her new family.)

Ayo, Little Mila!

Back in September, puppy Mila needed a place to crash for a few weeks until she could be transported to Holland. Mila is not one of our own rescues but we were approached and asked if we could assist after an initial foster home fell through. We had just arranged a healthy rescue to be re-homed so a quarantine spot was available for Mila!
Mila was found by a caring family who was visiting the island. They wanted to bring Mila back to The Netherlands with them but because she was still so young when they found her and because she didn't receive the proper vaccinations yet, they had to leave her on Curaçao. A quarantaine spot was made available for Mila, so she could crash at one of our regular fosters for a few weeks.

Mila is a little darling and from the moment she first arrived at her foster house, she has been a real sweetheart. She is a total cuddle bug who loves her belly rubs, crawls up in your lap and will repay you with sloppy ear kisses - it's a pretty good deal.

The one thing Mila does not enjoy is being left by herself. Her fosters first found out when they left her in their laundry room while they went out to do grocery shopping. When they came back, little Mila couldn't be found in her bed nor in her crate. She had climbed her way up onto the laundry machine which gave her a perfect view into the attached living room. No one could sneak in or out of the house without Mila knowing it! :-)

During the following weeks, our vet made sure that Mila received all the proper medications and vaccinations for her upcoming trip to The Netherlands. All of her papers had to be in order for her to be able to leave Curaçao. Meanwhile in The Netherlands, the family who rescued Mila was busy to find her a warm and loving home. A little team work goes a long way because on Monday, October 26, it was time for Mila to fly to The Netherlands. Together with travel buddy and fellow CARFIE Bumper, her foster parents, and another CARF volunteer, Mila went to Hato Airport. A loving family in The Netherlands had laid eyes on Mila and couldn't wait to open their hearts and their home to this little girl.

Sweet Mila, we wish you a life full of love and happiness, with lots of treats and toys, daily belly rubs, and many happy moments with your new family!

We would like to thank Perla & Friends - Dog Rescue for finding Mila a forever home in The Netherlands, Rossana K., Denise V., our foster for taking Mila in and taking care of her, our vet for arranging all the papers and vaccinations, and most of all, the loving family who opened their hearts and home for Mila. Team work makes the dream work!

Bumper goes Netherlands

This month, two CARFIES found their forever home... in The Netherlands! On Monday, October 26th, both Bumper and Mila left the island to be with their new family 8,000km away from Curaçao. Ayo, sweethearts! Here is Bumper's story.

CARFIE Bumper goes Holland

Bumper joined the ever-growing CARF family in July this year. He was found stumbling the streets by two tourists. They took him to the vet and then reached out to us for help. His rescuers eventually had to leave the island to go back to The Netherlands. But they ensured us that they would adopt Bumper. They would fly him "home" as soon as we would decide that he was in good enough shape to fly.Well, Bumper's patience was rewarded as he hit the jackpot with his new mommies! They had been waiting for him for months, so you can imagine how happy they were to finally be able to see and hold him in their arms again. Despite the cold weather, Bumper was very warmly welcomed at Schiphol. Not only did he receive a big 'Welcome Home' balloon, Bumper even had a TV crew waiting for him! Just a few minutes in the country, and our Bumpie is already a 'Bekende Nederlander' (Famous Dutchie).

Sweet Bumper, you had a rough start in life but now you have a wonderful home where you are loved. We hope you have many happy healthy years with your family

Buddy, The Friendly Barker

Became a CARFIE:  2015.04.24
Was adopted:          2015.07.09

New Name:              Brody

On April 24th, 2015, we received a message from someone saying that they had spotted a skinny stray dog who was clearly in need of help. She couldn't take him in herself, but she could tell us where we could find him: Cas Abao Beach. With its clear turquoise water, waving palm trees and white sandy beach, Cas Abao is a true paradise. But for Buddy? Not so much. We can only guess how this poor soul ended up here, but we knew that he wouldn't survive here much longer. Buddy was in bad shape, he was very skinny and you could count every rib and see his spine. He was also covered in hundreds of ticks and at fleas. It was time for action.

A volunteer offered to drive out to Cas Abao to check if Buddy was still there. She couldn't leave until after she finished work so it took a few hours, but we eventually received good news. Not only did she found Buddy, he had let her pick him up without much resistance. The volunteer had placed Buddy in her car and they were now together on their way to the shelter.

A few days later Buddy was able to move to his foster family. When he first got there, he was really shy. He would watch their every move and didn't make any attempts to leave his spot in the corner of the room. Eating from their hands? He'd rather not.

It wasn't until a few days later when we let Buddy meet with some other dogs. We weren't sure how he would react, but we soon found that this was the best thing we could have done. Buddy easily made friends with the other dogs and he started to copy their behavior. When our volunteers heard him bark for the first time, they were surprised by how loud his bark was. This quiet, timid dog would one day make a great guard dog!

Buddy slowly began to trust people and he started to enjoy his new life. He spent some more days at a second foster family before moving to his forever home.

Buddy is now named Brody, and is living happily with his loving human and a furry friend called Bailey.

"To see Buddy transform from a skinny and timid dog that was scared of everything and everyone into a happy and confident dog has been amazing. I couldn't be more happy for him that he found a forever home. He really deserved this life, this chance." - CARF Volunteer.

Drew, The Little Adventurer

About CARFIE Drew

  • Became a CARFIE: 2015.06.08
  • Was adopted: 2015.06.23
  • New Name: Candy

Puppy Drew was first spotted wandering the streets by one of our volunteers who just happened to drive there that evening. Drew was all by herself and about to venture onto a busy road. So our volunteer did what had to be done; she turned her car around and parked it at the side of the road.

Unlike many other stray dogs that we pick up from the streets, Drew was everything but shy. She immediately walked over to our volunteer – all the while wagging her little tail - who offered her some dog food that she had laying in her car. After checking if there was a mother dog in sight or if there were any other puppies scavenging around, our volunteer picked up Drew from the street and placed her into the car. Drew didn’t seem to mind at all, her tail was wagging as if she had been waiting to go on an adventure!

And so the adventure begins...

And an adventure it was. The volunteer took Drew home, where she gave her some more food and fresh water. Just the sight of food, or maybe it was the smell of it, made Drew's tail wag uncontrollably. What a happy, little puppy. The next morning, Drew was taken to the vet who told us she had worms, fleas, lice, anemia and ehrlichia. Just in case, she also had to be treated for canine distemper.

The next two weeks, Drew evolved into a kind, spunky, fun and loving puppy. She turned out to be very adventurous and enjoyed exploring new surroundings and meeting fellow dogs. She absolutely loved to cuddle and with her 'puppy eyes' she stole a lot of hearts. It wasn’t a big surprise that it was love at first sight when her new family first came to meet her.

Drew was adopted on June 23th by a loving and caring couple and is thriving in her new home.

“With the help of CARF, who provided all the food, medicine, vet expenses, toys and blankets, we were able to find Drew a loving home with a caring family in only two weeks time. It was a pleasure to have this little ball of energy in our home, and we will absolutely miss her. So long little Drew, you're going to be such a good girl!” - CARF Volunteer.
